Polling postponed as councillor candidate dies

The Election Commission has suspended the holding of polls in ward-7 under Thakurgaon Municipality following the death of the Councillor candidate of the ward Mainul Islam in cardiac arrest.

Mainul Islam, 60, died after a massive cardiac arrest at Thakugaon Sadar Hospital during treatment around 4:00 pm on Saturday. 

He had been campaigning for the councillor candidate with the 'Ostrich' symbol. Earlier, he was elected councillor two times from the same ward. 

Family sources of Mainul Islam informed he had been suffering from various physical ailments for a long time. He turned ill at his own house at Shahpara area of the town on Saturday afternoon. He was rushed to the hospital but died there during treatment.

District Election Officer and Returning Officer of Thakurgaon Zilhaj Uddin informed, six candidates were in the election fray at ward-7 of Thakurgaon Municipality. The election in the ward has been postponed following the death of a candidate. Elections in other wards under the Municipality will continue, he added.  

Other councillor candidates of the ward are-Abul Hossain (Table Lamp), Arif Hossain( Punjabi), Mominul Islam( pomegranate), Ramjan Ali (lady's finger) and Ratan Chandra Debnath (Gajor).

In Thakugaon Municipality elections, three candidates are vying for the post of Mayor, 56 candidates are for 12 ward councillors and nine candidates vying for Women's reserved seat.
