Election to the four municipalities of Chapainwabganj district are likely to be held by the December this year as per the decision of Election Commission.
Aiming at the election, the campaigning and publicity of the candidates from Awami League and from BNP for the post of Mayor and other posts of the districts’ Shibganj municipality has been geared up.
Possible candidates are moving door to door with a series of pledges. Most of them are promising to build Shibganj as a clean, modern municipality.
Candidates from all parties are 100 per cent hopeful of getting successful if they are nominated from the party as its chosen candidate. However, the voters informed, they would elect an honest and competent candidate.
Though after 1994, all Awami League candidates have failed to be elected as mayor of Shibganj, this year a new AL candidate Syed Monirul Islam seems to be the choice of the voters of the municipality. So far, the municipality has been dominated either by BNP or by Jamaat.
However, the local Al leaders and activists of Shibganj are now envisioned with the new AL possible candidate Syed Monirul Islam, former General Secretary of Shahid-Salam Barkat Hall unit of Chhatra League of Jahangir Nagar University.
Monirul has already started to reorganise the party by arranging courtyard meetings in various villages and areas of the municipality. Braving the Corona pandemic, he is moving door to door, even visiting the Corona infected patients and families of the area.
He also made a humanitarian instance by helping some 20,000 poor people during the Corona pandemic through the organisation 'GK Foundation' he established in the municipality. GK Foundation carried foods and other essentials to the houses of poor people during the Corona situation.
Monirul Islam was involved in student politics from his school life and started actively to organise Chhatra League at Jahangirnagar University from 1994 when he got admitted there and was elected as the General Secretary of Shahid Salam- Barkat Hall. After the end of his student life, he established a voluntary organisation named GK Foundation and braving innumerous odds, he started to reorganize AL and working unitedly by bridging the difference between party factions. He has been arranging and attending way side meetings, exchange of views and mass communication daily to win the party nomination and to be elected as the Mayor of Shibganj Municipality from the AL.
Syed Monirul Islam said, he has been doing the politics of the ideals of Bangabandhu and Sheikh Hasina. He had also borne torture and trouble from Shibir while in politics at Jahangirnagar University. Hew added, he had always been beside the politically repressed people and always will be in future. He has never played any role of betrayal for the party. He hoped, the party high command will nominate him as a Mayoral candidate from the party during the ensuing Shibganj Municipality elections.
