Cabinet has recently drafted a policy for radioactive waste management by obligating polluters to pay for not efficient disposal of the highly hazardous materials.

The policy is intended to obligate the users of radioactive elements or polluters to take the main role for safe disposal of the hazardous wastes in line with the standard set by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

However, at the same time the government plans to keep the use of atomic energy to a minimum in the country in order to avoid massive amounts of radioactive wastes. The policy to manage radioactive waste will cover medical, scientific and energy sectors.

The policy will not cover the radioactive wastes to be produced from the under construction Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Pabna as it will be brought back by its Russian operator in line with an agreement signed earlier.

The policymakers must be applauded

for their prompt action in producing

 legislature adhering to radioactive waste

The policymakers must be applauded for their prompt action in producing legislature adhering to radioactive waste. Indeed, it is an issue that must be prioritized as it has major repercussions to the environment and human health.

We also stand with the government’s decision to minimize use of atomic energy to a minimum as it will reduce the likelihood of accidents taking place. The authorities must ensure further precautions for all projects involving nuclear energy, particularly Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.

Undoubtedly, nuclear energy is a clean source of energy which can be used to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. However, the use of nuclear energy is a very dangerous risk as there is always high chance of terrible accidents taking place.

If we look at the pages of history, we can easily see the horrifying consequences of being reckless when using nuclear energy, from Chernobyl to Fukushima. We must prevent history from repeating itself by taking all necessary measures to prevent such a thing from taking place in our country.
