Police are still in the dark about the motive behind the murder of Anwarul Azim Anar, a Member of Parliament from Jhenaidah-4 constituency.
Neither the police of Bangladesh nor the police of India have yet to find the reason behind the killing of the lawmaker.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman has said that the motive behind the murder of Anwarul Azim Anar is yet to be known.
The DMP boss said that US-Bangladeshi citizen Akhtaruzzaman Shahin, who is believed to be the mastermind of the murder, is now out of the country and has not been arrested yet.
“Once he (Shahin) will be arrested, we can learn about the motive for the murder,” he said in reply to a question from journalists at the opening ceremony of the “Database and Analysis of Road Crash (DARC) Software” training programme organised at the DMP headquarters on Wednesday.
Bangladesh does not have a prisoner extradition agreement with the United States. In that case, asked what initiative the police were taking to bring the accused back to stand trial, the DMP commissioner said, “In this case, the police will make best efforts. Since he (Anar) was a Member of Parliament, the matter will be considered with utmost importance.
“Although we don’t have that kind of agreement with America, every other medium or diplomatic channel will be tried as best as possible.”
When asked whether the prisoner exchange agreement with India would be used in this case, Habibur Rahman said that this incident could be tried under the laws of Bangladesh, and since it took place in India, it could be tried there as well. So, it can be decided through our mutual discussion.
However, Anwarul Azim Anar’s younger daughter Mumtarin Ferdous Doreen will go to Kolkata for a DNA test to determine whether the pieces of meat recovered from the septic tank of Sanjeeva Gardens in Newtown, Kolkata, belong to Anar.
She said, “The recovered pieces of flesh should be proved in DNA test. My family will not accept until proof.”
Doreen was talking to reporters in front of her residence in Madhuganj Bazar around 11:00am on Wednesday.
She also said, knowing the news about the recovery of pieces of meat from the septic tank of Sanjeeva Gardens in Kolkata’s Newtown in the media, “I called and messaged Bangladesh DB chief Harun-Or-Rashid on Tuesday night. Later, he gave the details over the phone.”
MP Anar’s Personal Assistant (PS) Abdur Rauf and his uncle will accompany her to Kolkata. They will go to Dhaka tonight (Wednesday) and may leave for Kolkata tomorrow (Thursday)
According to Kolkata Police and Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police sources, among the few people who have been named in the murder of parliament member Anar, apart from the four arrested, four are still absconding. So far, three arrests have been made in Bangladesh, and one has been made in Kolkata, India.
