Police on Tuesday conducted a special anti-noise pollution drive in the capital's Tantibazar intersection, seizing hydraulic horns from nine vehicles as part of an ongoing campaign to reduce excessive noise and improve road discipline in Dhaka.
The operation was carried out from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at Tantibazar intersection under the Kotwali Traffic Zone of the Lalbagh Traffic Division.
The drive was led by Additional Deputy Police Commissioner Pahan Chakma and Assistant Police Commissioner AKM Manzurul Alam.
Traffic Inspector Bidyut Kumar, Traffic Inspector Abdullah Ibne Jewel, Traffic Sergeant TSI and other traffic sergeants and officials stationed at Tantibazar also took part in the operation.
During the day-long drive, police identified nine vehicles fitted with illegal hydraulic horns, which are widely regarded as a major source of noise pollution in the city. The hydraulic horns were immediately removed and seized, while legal action was taken against the vehicle owners under the relevant laws.
Police officials said the use of hydraulic horns not only violates traffic regulations but also contributes significantly to urban noise pollution, posing health risks to pedestrians, commuters and residents. Prolonged exposure to excessive noise can lead to hearing impairment, stress, sleep disorders and other health complications.
The officials said the campaign is part of a broader initiative by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) to curb noise pollution and promote safer, more disciplined road use. They urged drivers to refrain from installing or using prohibited horns and to comply with traffic regulations.
The traffic authorities also called on vehicle owners and drivers to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in creating a healthier urban environment.
Police said similar drives will continue in different parts of the capital, warning that strict legal action will be taken against those found using illegal hydraulic horns or other devices that contribute to excessive noise pollution.
