Police seized 200 sacks of Indian sugar in the border upazila of Kalmakanda, Netrakona. The truck transporting the sugar was also confiscated, though the driver and his assistant managed to escape upon noticing the approaching authorities.
On Wednesday night, acting on a tip-off, Kalmakanda police intercepted the truck on the stadium road of the upazila. According to police reports, detectives had alerted them about the illegal shipment of sugar from India destined for Dhaka.
When the patrolling officers attempted to stop the truck, the driver and his assistant abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. In response, the police have filed a smuggling case against unknown individuals involved in the incident.
Officer-in-Charge Md Lutful Haque of Kalmakanda Police Station confirmed the seizure. He stated that the confiscated 10 metric tonnes of sugar will be officially processed through legal channels. The operation to apprehend those responsible for the smuggling is ongoing.
