Police nab hundreds of Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar

Police in riot gear stormed multiple tourist spots on Friday, removing hundreds of Rohingya men, women and children from various tourist spots in Cox's Bazar. These Rohingyas came out of various Rohingya camps in Ukhia and Teknaf upazilas to visit the beach on the occasion of Eid holidays.

Cox's Bazar is now overflowing with tourists during the Eid holidays. More than one lakh tourists have arrived at various points including Laboni Sugandha Kalatali on the beach since Wednesday morning. It is learned that Rohingyas have been seen in groups at different spots on the beach since Tuesday morning. They gather in crowds at entertainment centers. When the news reached various law enforcement agencies, they became vocal.

Cox's Bazar Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Rafiqul Islam said the police had been divided into several teams since noon after receiving reports of Rohingyas roaming around the beach in groups. More than four and a half hundred Rohingyas were detained and brought to Sadar Police Station from different points including Laboni Sugandha Kalatali on the beach till evening. Among them are women and children and adult Rohingya. He said they had come out of various Rohingya camps to visit Cox's Bazar beach.

He said that a large number of tourists have already come to Cox's Bazar. They have an issue of safety. When a large number of Rohingyas come from the camp to the beach, the tourists who come to the beach may be scared. Rohingyas cannot leave the camp like this.

He said senior officials of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Office had been informed about the Rohingyas detained on the beach. Determining which camps the Rohingyas have escaped from is being checked. He said they would be sent to the Rohingya transit camp in Ukhia.

On the other hand, the detained Rohingyas said that they had come to visit the beach on the occasion of Eid holiday.
