Bangladesh Police have launched a new cell, 'Police Cyber Support for Women' service, to prevent cybercrimes against women in the country.
Women in our society often become victims of cyber crimes in their personal, family and social lives.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Benazir Ahmed formally launched the service at a program at the Rajarbagh Police Lines Auditorium in Dhaka on Monday.
Police Headquarters launched a Facebook page - ‘Cyber Support for Women’, an email ID and a hotline number to receive complaints of cyber harassments against women and to provide necessary advice and legal supports for the women victims.
Women who often become victims of cyber bullying, ID hacking, publishing sensitive information such as personal pictures, videos and sexual harassment in the cyber world can make complaint there. The police headquarters will provide necessary services and legal assistance keeping the victim's information confidential.
Speaking as the chief guest at the opening ceremony, Dr Benazir said, “Cybercrime is a boundless crime.”
“Generally, women, aged between 18 and 24, are the most victims of cyber crimes in the country. Sixty eight percent of women in the cyber world are victims of cyber crime. This is our initiative to ensure their safety and keep cyberspace safe for them,” he added.
The specialty of this unit is to serve these victims and to investigate against the culprits and take necessary steps. All who work here are female members of the police. So, the victims can feel free to talk about their problems, Dr Benazir Ahmed.
He also said, "Cyber crime is increasing day by day. So far, 6,099 cases have been lodged under the Cyber Act. DMP, DB, CID, PBI are working to solve the cases.”
The newly launched service will create awareness against the risks of the cyber world. If any unwanted problem arises, we will work on it. In this case, we will serve the victims with the highest privacy, he added.
IGP further said, “Any victim can contact us through 999 from any part of the country. We hope victims will take our service after the inauguration of the new service. We want to make the cyber world safer for women.”
