Poetry reading and poetry recitation plays a big role in building the country in the spirit of the Liberation War, said the Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hassan Mahmud.

He was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural function of a nationwide symposium titled 'Uchchanthe Uchcharo Aaj Manush Mohiyan' organized by Bangladesh Recitation Artists' Parliament at Shilpakala Academy's Gallery in Dhaka on Wednesday evening. Actor and reciter Subarna Mustafa MP inaugurated the programme after the guests lit Mangaldeep (prayer candles).

Dr Hasan said, “Bangladesh has become independent through the combined bloodshed of people of all faiths to build a non-communal state out of the communal state system of Pakistan. But unfortunately, the consciousness on which the country has become independent, our society in many cases has moved away from it.

The Minister said there is no alternative to culture to establish the spirit of Liberation War in the life of the state and society and to build the next generation in that spirit. Poetry reading and poetry recitation create a sophisticated mind. That is why poetry should be encouraged more.

Referring to his own love of poetry, the Information and Broadcasting Minister said that under his direction, BTV Chittagong Center broadcasts two poetry recitals every month and people from all over the country can watch the terrestrial broadcasts of this center. Besides, it can be seen across the country through cable network.
