Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the MRT Line-6, stretching from Agargaon to Motijheel, in October this year.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader made the announcement during a seminar, organized by the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) on Sunday. The seminar focused on reviewing the progress of the metro rail project.
According to DMTCL Managing Director MAN Siddique, trial run on the MRT Line-6 route from Agargaon to Motijheel will commence in July. The overall progress of the line, including the section from Uttara North to Motijheel, has reached an impressive progress of 94.76 percent.
The Prime Minister inaugurated the Agargaon to Uttara North section on December 28 of last year. The remaining section from Agargaon to Motijheel stands at 94.32 percent progress, with a grand opening planned for October.
Furthermore, the construction progress for the segment from Motijheel to Kamalapur currently stands at 5.37 percent. This section is expected to be inaugurated in June 2025. The cumulative progress of procuring electrical and mechanical systems, rolling stock (rail coaches), and depot equipment has reached 89.71 percent.
Minister Obaidul Quader has also mentioned that the elevated expressway up to Tejgaon will be completed before the upcoming elections this year. Subsequently, the government plans to address any complications with the City Corporation and other organizations to progress further with the project.
Expressing his disapproval, the minister referred to the act of hanging posters on the metro rail as a ‘famine of taste’. He further stated that individuals involved in this activity would be held accountable under the law.
Additionally, Bridges Minister and Awami League General Secretary Oabaidul Quader emphasized the government’s commitment to balancing environmental concerns with the economic development of the country.
Moreover, Minister Quader urged the two mayors of the Dhaka City Corporation to take measures to prevent smoking in all open public spaces.
The MRT Line-6 project is a significant step towards improving Dhaka’s transportation infrastructure, reducing traffic congestion, and enhancing connectivity within the city. With the upcoming inauguration in October, the government aims to provide a reliable and efficient mass transit system to benefit the citizens of Dhaka.
