The future of the cooperation between India and Bangladesh will be etched out during the four-day state visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the invitation of her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi. Experts have called the meetings crucial in deciding the direction of mutual cooperation and development between the two countries.

The PM will likely discuss several important issues which remain unresolved, such as the Teesta water-sharing and winning India’s support in Rohingya repatriation. She will also address the exclusion of Bengali speakers from the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Undoubtedly, the Rohingya issue is one of the biggest challenges that the government is currently dealing with. Hopefully, with India’s support it will become easier to resolve the crisis. India is one of the world’s most influential countries and if they exert pressure on Myanmar it may speed up the repatriation process.

Cooperation with our next-door neighbour

India is a top priority for us and if the two

countries join hands it will be a

massive boost for our economic growth

Furthermore, the two prime ministers will also discuss issues such as the blue economy, peaceful use of nuclear energy, aerospace research and cyber security. The PM will attend a program of the World Economic Forum in New Delhi with the theme 'Innovating for India; Strengthening South Asia, Impacting the World', they said. During the visit, the leaders and officials of the two countries are likely to sign eight Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in different areas, including connectivity, culture, technical cooperation and trade and investment.

Cooperation with our next-door neighbour India is a top priority for us and if the two countries join hands it will be a massive boost for our economic growth. Moreover, the development sector also stands to gain from signing a deal with India as their support would mean that almost all sectors can be improved upon.

The Prime Minister is expected to take an advantage in the India Economic Forum to highlight the country’s progress in recent times especially the issue of Bangladesh graduating to a middle income from LDC. The premier will also seek investment from major Indian investors who will be present during the forum.

We wish the premier safe travels and hope that she will be able to secure deals with India that will help Bangladesh move ahead in terms of development. In the past India has proved to be a faithful friend in our hour of need. We hope that once again they will extend a helping hand to the country to help us resolve Rohingya crisis and other outstanding issues.
