In a bid to save our climate, the use of plastic is something we must put to a complete halt. In this regard, the government should start taking several green development initiatives which will also help us achieve sustainable development goals.

Plastic use in Bangladesh has increased three times in the last 15 years. The per capita plastic use in urban areas of the country tripled to 9.0 kg in 2020 from 3.0 kg in 2005, according to a new study.

We encourage more people to reduce the use of plastic in our daily life. We should try to use alternatives for plastic products and recycle the ones already in use. If we committedly try our best to reduce the use of plastic, we will reach our goal in time. We can make our cities and country clean and green again.

The government should now take proper

steps to promote the use of locally

established environment-friendly bags

According to the study report, the sustainable management of plastic will be crucial for Bangladesh to tackle the increasing plastic pollution and ensure green growth. The Covdid-19 pandemic has increased the use of packaging and shopping bags. The baseline on plastic waste says only 30 percent of post-consumer packaging waste is collected.

Plastic bottles are found in chunks while cleaning the canals and drains of the capital. This leads to waterlogging in the capital during the monsoon.

After use, they are thrown into different water bodies which later flow into the Bay of Bengal. Aquatic animals are heavily harmed due to it. As a result, it is becoming a serious threat to the environment and public health day by day.

The government should now take proper steps to promote the use of locally established environment-friendly bags. A High Court rule was issued last year which banned the use of plastic bags from coastal areas as well as the hotels and restaurants. Therefore, this should be another instrumental factor for the government to take action and hurry the process of replacing plastic bags with locally developed environmentally friendly bags. That can be the use of jute bags as well.
