Recent surveys suggest that the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has reached a staggering height in the past few years. Moreover, the global temperature has also risen by one degree in the past decade as a result of the rise in greenhouse gases. Against such a dismal background, it is commendable that there have been massive undertakings on a national level by the government to take initiatives which are aimed at preventing the decay of the atmosphere from progressing any further.

In accordance with this, during the World Environment Day Fair 2019 in the capital, a national tree plantation campaign has been started which is being headed by the Prime Minister herself. Her advocacy for a better environment through planting trees by the citizens for betterment of the environment is undoubtedly a great step towards ensuring the survival of the planet and a healthy environment for the future.

The government’s pledge to

reach 20 percent plant population

 in the country is commendable

Surveys show that Bangladesh only has 17.5 percent greenery in total whereas a country should have at least 25 percent. Moreover, the government’s pledge to reach 20 percent plant population in the country is commendable. But, such a huge undertaking cannot be accomplished by the government. The citizens should also pitch in and lend a hand by planting sufficient number of trees in their respective surroundings.

Moreover, there have been initiatives from the government which suggest that the adding of new infrastructural facilities like roads can be built on elevated earth works above canals and water bodies which will ensure the survival of the micro ecosystems in return.

On another note, the parts per million number of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have reached a frightening and dangerous level. Anymore rise in the number will make life drastic in the world. It is high time for the world leaders to come together and take appropriate actions against this serious problem.

Planting trees is one way to counteract excess carbon dioxide. But, more effective measures should be taken for a permanent and concrete solution.
