Pickup van kills woman in Noakhali

A 55-year-old housewife Nazneen Akhter Khuki was killed when she was hit by a speeding pickup van at the Garments junction near Charjabbar College Gate on Noakhali's Subarnachar Upazila. Another motorcyclist named Arifur Rahman Sumon (40) was injured in the accident. Locals arrested the driver Abu Jaher Khokon (35) along with his pickup and handed him over to the police.

The accident took place around 6 am on Friday. The deceased was identified as Nazneen Akhter, wife of Mahmudul Haque of Hazirhat area under Dharmapur union of Khuki Sadar upazila. Injured Sumon is the niece of the slain girl. The arrested pickup driver Khokon is a resident of Nazirpur area of Begumganj.

According to local sources, Nazneen Akhter Khuki was going to Chairman Ghat on a motorcycle with her niece in the morning to see her sick mother. On the way, they reached the Garments junction adjacent to Charjabbar College Gate on the Chairmanghat-Sonapur road. The girl was killed and Sumon was injured on the spot. The injured Sumon was rescued and sent to Noakhali General Hospital. Later, the locals arrested the pickup driver and handed him over to the police.

Witnesses said the pickup hit several vehicles, including a CNG autorickshaw, on its way from Chairman Ghat. After coming to Subarnachar, the woman riding the motorcycle died due to the reckless speed of the driver.

Charjabbar police inspector (investigation) said. Zakir Hossain confirmed the matter and said 

necessary steps would be taken in this case.
