Lieutenant General (Retd.) Mohammad Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture, has stated that the people will play the central role in ensuring free, fair, and participatory elections. He made these remarks during a views-exchange meeting held on Monday at the Sylhet Deputy Commissioner’s conference room.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police from across the Sylhet division, as well as senior officials from the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Ansar, Department of Prisons, Fire Service and Civil Defence, Department of Immigration and Passports, Department of Narcotics Control, and various departments under the Ministry of Agriculture.

Regarding the interim government's priorities, the Adviser said that the main objective is to hand over power to a political government through a credible election, fulfilling the public’s expectations. He emphasised that while the Election Commission must be prepared, proper coordination between the civil administration and law enforcement is equally essential. A secure and fearless environment must be ensured so that voters can confidently attend polling stations.

Commenting on internal reforms, he noted improvements in the transparency of recruitment and postings within the police and other forces, urging officials to act impartially. He instructed law enforcement to maintain zero tolerance towards drug trafficking, labelling it a major threat to national security.

On agriculture, he stressed the need to ensure fair prices for farmers and called for the utilisation of fallow land.

Earlier, he visited the BGB Sector Headquarters and Police Lines in Sylhet.
