People in Bangladesh are taking the Covid-19 vaccine “spontaneously ignoring rumours” as the number of total recipients crosses 9 lakh in a week.

Besides, more than 17,46,000 people have registered for the vaccination till 6pm on Sunday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

“A section of people are spreading rumours over Covid-19 vaccine, but people received the jab spontaneously ignoring their rumors,” Health Minister Zahid Malque said on Sunday.

“All sorts of rumors have been proved false,” he said as people are crowding the designated hospitals to take the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab.

The minister was visiting a 300-capacity Covid-19 dedicated hospital at Khanpur in Narayanganj city.

The DGHS said till Sunday, 906,033 people have received the first dose since February 7 when the government rolled out the countrywide drive, much earlier than many other countries in the world.

On Sunday alone, 169,353 people received the first dose across the country. Of them, 112,848 were male and 56,505 female.

Some 32 people developed minor side effects such as fever and pain on the vaccine site after getting their shots.

The health minister urged all people to receive Covid-19 vaccines to protect themselves and others from the pandemic Coronavirus.

“I am urging all levels of people to take vaccines. Vaccine is the only way to get rid of the pandemic,” he said.
