Due to heavy rainfalls in Chattogram city for the last two days, many roads and streets are submerged in the knee-deep water, causing immense sufferings to the city dwellers.
The traffic movement has been disrupted and shops have also been shut due to the waterlogging in many areas, especially, in Patenga, Kathgarh, Agrabad, Gate No 2, Bahaddar Haat and Muradpur areas.
Advocate Jayashree Nandi, a resident of the city's Baklia area, said the area was submerged even in light to moderate rainfalls as the drains were not clean.
“Currently, the area is under knee-deep water. Traffic is almost at a standstill. People are unable to move even on foot. The basements of many shops and business establishments have been flooded,” described Nandi.
Jewel, a resident of Muradpur area, said that Bahaddar Haat, Chandgaon and Muradpur area was under water. Most of the shops were closed due to waterlogging, he added.
Nupur Dhar, a resident of Kathgarh area, said that the Chattogram City Corporation was not active in cleaning the drains.
Agrabad Children's Hospital, Government Karmas College, Dewanhat, Munsurabad, Pathantuli, Doublemooring, Motherbari Bangla Bazar Area, Bandar Saltgola Crossing, Korban Ali Shah Para, Gate No 2, Muradpur, EPZ, Bandartila, Cement Crossing, Akmal Ali Road Barricade Area, Nazir Para, South Patenga Laldiar Char Area, Vijay Nagar, Maijpara, Kathgarh, and Patenga Beach Area faced severe waterlogging on Monday, said local people of the areas.
Chattogram Meteorological Office Forecast Officer Md Ismail Bhuiyan said that 60 millimetres of rainfalls in three hours from 9:00 am to 12 noon on Tuesday was recorded.
There is a possibility of heavy downpours in the district in the next 48 hours. Besides, there is a risk of landslides due to the incessant rains.
