People’s involvement in making policies for sustainable dev underscored

Speakers at a roundtable dialogue have emphasized on the importance of citizen involvement in shaping policies for sustainable development in Bangladesh. They underscored the commitment of all stakeholders to work together to address the challenges faced by the country.

Promoting Advocacy and Rights (PAR) Activity, implemented by Counterpart International and funded by USAID, arranged the roundtable discussion on ‘Opportunities for the 12th Parliament: Citizen Recommendations for Sustainable Development’ in Dhaka city on Sunday (December 24, 2023). 

Awami League lawmaker Saber Hossain Chowdhury, special envoy to the Prime Minister for climate change; and Jatiya Party lawmaker Barrister Shameem Haider Patwary spoke on the occasion as the chief guest and special guest through joining virtually. 

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal MP Shirin Akhter, Aroma Dutta, MP, representatives from civil society representatives, and policymakers took part in the discussion with PAR Chief of Party Katie Croake in the chair. 

The roundtable dialogue highlighted pressing concerns raised by citizens in Bangladesh, focusing on key areas such as Environmental Pollution, Unplanned Urbanization, and Social Inclusion.

During the event, civil society coalitions and community networks presented well-researched recommendations and actionable solutions. 

Key recommendations proposed include: Ensure the constitutional rights and access to social empowerment processes for marginalized communities including Dalits; Invest in smart and sustainable urbanization to safeguard the well-being of all citizens; and Strengthen environmental protection by reducing air, noise, and water pollution.

In his speech, Saber Hossain Chowdhury said, “You will see these recommendations are reflected in our manifesto. I look forward to continuing this dialogue in January to develop a roadmap to address citizen priorities in the next Parliament.”

Barrister Shameem Haider Patwary said, “Thank you for this excellent recommendation for providing a bridge for dialogue between the policymakers and the people.”

Aroma Dutta said, “I look forward to working to realize the electoral manifesto for inclusive development for all marginalized communities to achieve a Smart Bangladesh.”

Shirin Aktarsaid, “I appreciate all the recommendations today and particularly support expanding technical training opportunities to increase employment for marginalized citizens.”

PAR Chief of Party said ahead of the upcoming national elections, the Promoting Advocacy and Rights (PAR) partner organisations arranged inclusive community dialogues to identify and prioritize citizen-led recommendations for the 12th Parliament. “I am proud that our partners are focusing on important issues facing their communities and am encouraged that policymakersappreciate and want to continue working with PAR’s network to address citizen priorities,” said PAR Chief of Party, Katie Croake.
