Teesta water rising due to rain

People leave homes, take shelter on dykes

The water of Teesta river in the northern district is flowing over the danger line due to heavy rains and upstream slope. At 8 am on Friday, the country's largest irrigation project Teesta Barrage point, the river water flowed above the danger level (52.60) 14 cm. Water Development Board Dalia Executive Engineer Asfa Ud Daula confirmed the matter and said that the Teesta water was flowing over the danger zone due to heavy rains and upstream slope. To control the situation, 44 water gates of the barrage have been kept open. As a result, the char areas have been flooded in the downstream areas of the river. On the other hand, a yellow signal has been issued in the Teesta of the upper Indian part. Teesta water is flowing above the danger level (85.96 cm) at Do-Mohani point in India and the water level continues to rise, according to Indian website sources. Char areas in Nilphamari, Rangpur, Kurigram and Lalmonirhat have been inundated due to rising river Teesta. Local people's representatives confirmed the matter and said that the river water is rising rapidly. Residents of the area adjacent to the river have been asked to evacuate safely.

Meanwhile, the Teesta water level is rising due to continuous heavy rains and hill slopes and is entering the riverside and remote char villages of seven unions of Gangachara upazila of Rangpur. Several houses were submerged in the West Bagerhat area of Laxmitari Union. Roads and land crops have been damaged. Many are leaving their homes and taking shelter in high places including dams of Water Development Board due to waterlogging. Local resident Akbar Ali said, "The river water has been rising and falling for the last few days. 

However, houses in the area were submerged in the floodwaters from the upper reaches on Friday morning, ”said Abdullah Al Hadi, chairman of the Laxmitari Union. 

Hundreds of houses have been submerged in West Ishali, East Ishali, Shankardah, Bagerhat and Kalagachhi areas.

Ahsan Habib, executive engineer of Rangpur Water Development Board, said that Chargram of several unions including Laxmitari, Kolkonda, Gajghanta, Morneya and Nohali of Gangachara have been inundated due to the Teesta water flowing over the danger zone. People in these areas have been told to go to higher ground. Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Asib Ahsan said all preparations have been made to deal with any situation including floods.
