Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Saturday said the strength of the AL is the people of the country, not any foreign country.

“We have a friendly relations with India. There was no benefit from the enmity with India that lingered for 21 years. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party created that enmity and a sense of mistrust. But it is Sheikh Hasina who has removed the wall of mistrust,” he said.

The AL spokesperson came up with the remarks while addressing a peace rally, organised by AL Dhaka south city unit, at Mohammadpur in the capital.

Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, said India is our friend. “We do not go by any order

of any country. The main source of our power is the people of this country. We only maintain the friendship with India for our own interest. The BNP breached the relations for 21 years. We do not want to go back to that situation,” he said.

Being out of the power for a long period of time, the BNP leaders alleged that the AL becomes slave of India to stay in power.

Referring to the Ganges Water Treaty and settling borders issues, the AL general secretary said it was Sheikh Hasina who signed the Ganges Water Treaty and resolved border disputes.

Coming down heavily on BNP leader Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Quader said the BNP leader made blatant lies at Naya Palatan while addressing a rally.

“Where have you been? Where did you come from after a long period of time? Did you hide in India?” he posed questions.

Slamming the BNP leadership, Quader said Khaleda Zia forgot to raise the Ganges Water Treaty issue during her visit to India.

“When the reporters asked her about the issue, she (Khaleda) said she forgot to raise the issue. Now tell me, who are the agents,” he said.

Over the poor turn out of voters in the first phase of Upazila Parishad polls, he said 42 per cent of voters gave the mandate for the Awami League recognising the development activities of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“There were no incident of killing in the upazila polls. If the people boycotted the upazila parishad polls then who are those 36 t0 40 people who cast votes. They are the people of this country and they are amazed to have the development activities,” he said.

AL senior leaders, including Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Abdur Rahman, Qamrul Islam, Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif, BM Mozammel Haque, Mirza Azam, Afzal Hossain and Bilpab Barua among others also addressed the rally.
