Peking University Institute for Global Health & Development, Sunway University forge strategic partnership to advance Planetary

Peking University Institute for Global Health and Development and Sunway University have signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to drive joint research, training and policy work on planetary health. The signing took place at the International Planetary Health High-Level Forum in Beijing, hosted by the Institute.

The MOU commits both universities to: Joint research projects, co-authored publications, policy briefs and shared funding applications across climate and health, health systems resilience, and environmental governance, Regular conferences, seminars and policy dialogues to translate research into usable policy, Exchange programmes for faculty, researchers and students, including visiting scholar and internship opportunities and Joint curriculum development, and structured capacity-building for early-career researchers and future leaders in Planetary Health. 

The agreement also marks the appointment of Professor Tan Sri Dr Jemilah Mahmood, Executive Director of the Sunway Centre for Planetary Health, as Senior Fellow of Global Health at the Institute, a notable recognition of Malaysian leadership in the field from one of China's leading universities

"This partnership brings together two institutions with a shared conviction that the health of people and the planet cannot be separated. We look forward to working with Sunway University to build research and training capacity that serves not just our two institutions, but the wider region," said Professor Gordon G. Liu, Dean of the Peking University Institute for Global Health and Development.

By bringing together the expertise and perspectives of Peking University’s Institute for Global Health and Development and Sunway University, we can deepen research, knowledge exchange and capacity-building to address the complex and interconnected challenges affecting the health of people and our planet,” said Professor Sibrandes Poppema, President and Vice-Chancellor of Sunway University.

The MOU was signed by Professor Gordon G. Liu, Dean of the Peking University Institute for Global Health and Development; Professor Tan Sri Dr. Jemilah Mahmood, Executive Director of the Sunway Centre for Planetary Health, Sunway University; and Professor Sibrandes Poppema, President and Vice-Chancellor of Sunway University, before an audience of leading scientists and policymakers from across China.
