A low-pressure over the North Bay of Bengal has intensified, prompting the Bangladesh Meteorological Department to hoist cautionary signal No. 3 at Payra Sea Port and signal No. 1 at Patuakhali’s river ports.
As a result, water levels in the rivers of Rangabali upazila and surrounding coastal regions have risen significantly. Tidal surges, driven by the combined effect of the depression and the new moon, flooded low-lying areas, breached embankments and damaged infrastructure. Parts of Kuakata’s Marine Drive and police facilities were swept away by rough sea waves.
Seventeen embankment points in Kalapara, Bauphal, Dashmina, Galachipa, Rangabali and Mirzaganj upazilas have been breached, allowing seawater to enter villages, croplands and fish enclosures.
In Char Anda, Chalitabunia, and Char Montaj, water surged 3–4 feet above normal, leaving many families marooned and their fish farms submerged.
Locals report major losses as fish stocks were washed away.
