The High Court today ordered private mobile phone operator Robi Axiata Limited to pay dues of Taka 138 crore to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), reports BSS. The court directed the mobile operator to pay the amount to the BTRC in five equal installments within five months. The HC bench comprising Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice Khizir Hayat passed the order during the hearing of an appeal filed by Robi seeking an injunction on BTRC on realising Tk 867.23 crore.

Barrister Tanjibul Alam and Barrister Kazi Ershadul Alam appeared for Robi Axiata, while BTRC lawyer Barrister Khandaker Reza-E-Raquib moved for the telecom regulator during the hearing. Barrister Khandaker Reza-E-Raquib said the High Court passed the order in line with the Supreme Court directives that asked GrameenPhone to pay Taka 2,000 crore out of Taka 12,580 crore. On July 31 last year, the BTRC issued a notice asking Robi to pay Taka 867.23 crore as dues.

Later, Robi filed the appeal with a lower court in Dhaka seeking an injunction on realisation of the money by the BTRC but the court rejected the petition.
In October last, Robi submitted the appeal to the HC seeking injunction on the BTRC’s move to realise money. On November 25 in 2019, the High Court issued a rule asking the telecom regulator to explain why it should not be ordered to refrain from realizing Taka 867.23 crore from Robi. Following the rule, the HC passed the order today.
