Kajal Baran Das, Patuakhali: With the demand of climate justice and proper transformation, a 'Global Climate Strike' was held in Patuakhali.
Young climate activists from eight organisations of the district participated in the program held at Jhautala Square on Friday afternoon. A rally was held as part of the ongoing global movement while the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP-30) is underway in Belem, Brazil.
The event, jointly organized by Greenpeace Youth Development Society and ActionAid Bangladesh, in collaboration with Global Platform Bangladesh, was attended by various social, cultural, voluntary and environmental organizations including Volunteer for Bangladesh, Dhumketu Youth Foundation, BD Clean Patuakhali, Patuakhali Youth Development Foundation, Tarunye Auliapur, TIB Yes Member.
At the event, the youth displayed colorful posters, banners and placards demanding an end to fossil fuel financing, increased investment in renewable energy, and building a green, proper and equitable future for all. They said that the climate crisis is now not proper an environmental issue, but also a social justice issue.
At the event, the young climate activists emphasized that COP-30 must be a ‘decisive COP’, where justice will be ensured for the affected communities of the Global South. They called for concrete actions, accountability, and equitable distribution of climate finance, not empty promises.
In this peaceful march held in Patuakhali, like the rest of the country, young people, including those from across the country, demonstrated various global hashtags, further accelerating the climate movement.
At the time, Ahmed Kawsar, central president of Dhumketu Youth Foundation, said, “Climate justice means fair transition. We must support the leadership of youth in renewable energy and innovation by reducing dependence on fossil fuels. When young people come forward with green ideas, the world finds a way to regain its balance.”
