Uma Dasgupta, the actress who portrayed Durga in Satyajit Ray's iconic film ‘Pather Panchali’, has passed away at the age of 84. She breathed her last around 8 am on Monday at a private hospital on Bypass Road, Kolkata, after battling a prolonged illness.
Actor Chiranjeet Chakraborty confirmed the news to Indian media outlet Anandabazar. Uma Dasgupta had been diagnosed with cancer a few years ago. While she initially recovered, the illness returned, and her health had been deteriorating in recent months.
Chiranjeet, who lived in the same building as Uma Dasgupta, shared, "I met her daughter this morning, and she informed me of Uma di's passing. She had fought cancer bravely a few years ago."
Uma Dasgupta’s performance in ‘Pather Panchali’ (1955), directed by Satyajit Ray, remains her only cinematic role. In the film, she portrayed Durga, the elder sister of Apu, with remarkable innocence and vibrancy, leaving an indelible mark on audiences worldwide. Despite acting in only one movie, her role as Durga continues to be celebrated as one of the most heartfelt performances in Indian cinema.
Born with a natural talent for acting, Uma Dasgupta was involved in theatre from her school days. Her headmaster, who had a close relationship with Satyajit Ray, introduced her to the legendary filmmaker. Ray was impressed by her talent and cast her in ‘Pather Panchali.
Initially, Uma’s father opposed her acting in films. However, Ray convinced her family, paving the way for her to play the unforgettable role of Durga.
Professionally, Uma Dasgupta pursued a career as a schoolteacher. Though she stepped away from acting after ‘Pather Panchali, her portrayal of Durga remains an enduring legacy in the world of cinema.
