Patharghata Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Hossain Mohammad Al Mujahid escaped unhurt after a fire broke out on the Barguna-bound MV Ovijan 10 launch that left Dhaka.
He was a passenger in the launch's VIP cabin. His wife, Ummul Warra, broke her right leg while trying to escape from the launch. They are currently undergoing treatment at Jhalakati Sadar Hospital. UNO Mohammad Al Mujahid said they left Dhaka for Barguna at 7pm on Thursday . At around 3 pm, he was awakened by the screams of other passengers on the launch.Then he hurried out of the room and left in front of the launch. There were crowds of hundreds of people. At that time the launch was in the middle of Sugandha river. He said many were seen trying to jump into the river to survive. They too jumped from the smoke-laden launch .
Then his wife Ummul Warra broke her right leg. The locals then rescued them and took them to Jhalakati Sadar Hospital. He said, " There were also many women on the launch who jumped into the river, but there are doubts about whether they were able to reach the shore. '
