A couple was electrocuted while trying to save their son at Pekua Avirampur village under Banshtail union of Mirzapur upazila in Tangail on Sunday morning.
The deceased couple were identified as Md. Shahjahan Mia, 30, son of Md. Waz Uddin and his wife Belena Begum, 25, of Avirampur village.
The deceased Shahjahan was engaged had a tea stall in the local Bashtail Bazar and used to trade cows and buffaloes. The couple had two children named Anik, 10, and Jannat, 6.
Witnesses said that Shahjahan Mia, his wife Belena and son Anik went to the field next to their house to tie the buffalo around 7 am as usual when Anik got entangled in the main electric line lying in the water.
At this time, Belena was able to untangle the boy but, got entangled herself in the process. Later, when the matter came to Shahjahan's notice, he went to save his wife and got entangled too.
At that time, locals came forward and took them to the local clinic after rescuing. The doctor on duty there declared Belena Begum dead. Shahjahan was taken to Mirzapur Kumudini Hospital where he also died shortly after admission.
Several residents of Avirampur village complained that the WAPDA's main power line had been hung on low bamboo poles and tree branches, which is very dangerous. Occasionally the bamboo poles break and the open wires lie here and there by which people and animals get electrocuted.
Mirzapur Upazila Parishad Vice Chairman Azaharul Islam and Banshtail UP member Abdul Mannan, a resident of Avirampur village, said accidents were taking place all the time due to the whims of the WAPDA authorities.
Banshtail police outpost Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam confirmed the incident and said the couple's bodies would be handed over to their family after the legal process.
