Papaya cultivation gaining popularity in Singair

The farmers of Singair upazila of Manikganj district are getting interested in Papaya cultivation as it is profitable. 

A vast area of Singair upazila are covered with green papaya fields and the farmers are busy round the year for cultivating, nursing and harvesting. 

Papaya is supplied to the different markets including capital city Dhaka after fulfilling the demands of the district. 

A lot of families are cultivating papaya and extending its cultivation area every year, the Department of Agricultural Extension sources said.

Md Joynul Abedin of village Char Nayadingi and Monayem Ahmed Biplob of village Azimpur said they are expecting a profit of Tk 8 to 10 lakh this year with the cultivation of papaya. Fazal Huq, another cultivator of village Meghulia, said he has already earned about Tk 1.5 lakh selling papaya from his six bighas of land and he is expecting earning at least Tk 5-6 six lakh during the current season. Singair Upazila Agriculture Officer Tipu Sultan Swapon said a total of 985 hectares of land was brought under papaya cultivation during the current season with a production target of 31, 600 metric tonnes. 

He said the Department of Agricultural Extension is giving necessary training to cultivators and advices visiting the areas regularly for more production. So, the cultivators of the Upazila are feeling encouraged to cultivate the fruit.
