Panic surges in Sylhet region

2 more infected with Covid-19, girl dies with symptoms

Panic has been surged among people of Sylhet region after a doctor tested positive for the coronavirus.  Dr Moyeen Uddin, an assistant professor of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital (SOMCH), died of Covid-19 at Kurmitola General Hospital in Dhaka on Wednesday. He is the first doctor of the country die of coronavirus.

Death news of the doctor of a renowned hospital has baffled people and raised worries about the faulty medicare system in Sylhet.  The tension rises among the people as Covid-19 patients are on the rise in Sylhet region.Two more people have tested positive for Covid-19 at Jaintiapur and Gowainghat upazilas in Sylhet. 

The infected persons, both aged around 30, were sent to the isolation wards of the respective upazila health complexes on Thursday.  Civil Surgeon of Sylhet Premananda Mandal said that samples of the two patients were sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College (SOMCH) for tests on Wednesday and the results came on Thursday.

Meanwhile, a man who fled from Dhaka after being diagnosed with Covid-19, was found at his village home at Bishwambarpur upazila in Sunamganj on Wednesday night and sent to the isolation unit of the sadar hospital.

Shams Uddin, civil surgeon of Sunamganj, said that the Dhaka returnee man works at Popular Pharmaceuticals in Dhaka and came to his village on April 13. Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) informed the Sunamganj civil surgeon about the missing person on Wednesday.

On the other hand, a 10-year-old girl died with coronavirus-like symptoms in Sylhet on Thursday.  The child of Upasahar area in the city was taken to a private hospital in the morning as she had been suffering from flu-like symptoms for a couple of days.

The hospital referred her to the Coronavirus Isolation Centre of Shaheed Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital, suspecting it to be a Covid-19 case, said Dr Premananda Mandal. Later, family members took her to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where the on duty doctors declared her dead. Her sample has been collected for the Covid-19 test, the civil surgeon said.
