Since the late spring, panic starts gripping the coastal people as they fear high tidal surge caused by strong cyclonic storm breaching the risky embankment can leave a trail of devastation in their region any time.
Many points at the 5,757-km embankments constructed in the costal belts during the sixties have been damaged due to tidal surges, floods and downpour. A large number of cracks have been found at different points of the embankments.
As the existing embankments have already been weakened they cannot protect the coastal people’s lives and property effectively. Therefore, we think the government will repair embankments damaged by cyclonic storms on an emergency basis.
Due to lack of appropriate design and
construction of embankments the coastal
area remains fully unprotected
As the country is the worst sufferer of the consequence of climate change, sustainable embankment management appears as the need of the time.
Therefore, construction of a permanent climate-tolerant sustainable and strong embankment, having height of 30 feet and width of 100 feet on the ground and 30 feet on the top has become the need of the hour.We think the government will arrange emergency funds and engage local governments for the maintenance of the embankments.
The coastal people’s lives and livelihoods largely depend on embankments and the people of the region want sustainable embankments rather than food support. The government will have to enhance participatory embankment construction with collaboration of local authorities.
Due to lack of appropriate design and construction of embankments the coastal area remains fully unprotected. Therefore, we think emergency embankments will have to be built to protect the coastal area immediately.
