xThe iconic Pandar khal Dam in Dowarabazar Upazila of Sunamganj is facing an imminent threat due to the encroachment of sand and stone traders. The gravity of the situation has raised concerns about the dam's structural integrity as the bustling Chatak-Sunamganj road was constructed directly over it, serving as a major transportation artery for millions of people.
Over time, the dam has become surrounded by a haphazard collection of bricks, sand, and stones, potentially endangering its stability, particularly during the monsoon season. This predicament now jeopardizes the natural environment of this 50-year-old flood barrier, with locals fearing the possibility of a catastrophic dam collapse.
Locals recall a time when various valuable trees were planted to sustain the Pandar Khal Dam's ecosystem. This initiative transformed the dam into a verdant tourist haven, attracting nature enthusiasts and visitors from diverse regions. However, the idyllic natural setting has steadily eroded over the past few years.
Regrettably, Pandar Khal Dam has transformed into an unregulated dumping ground for influential and unscrupulous sand and stone traders. The majority of the dam's vegetation has perished under the weight of the accumulated construction materials on both sides of the dam. The remaining trees are now also in a state of decline.
Residents have voiced their frustration, asserting that sand and stone traders blatantly disregard regulations. Despite prohibitions against sand trading near busy roads and embankments, this illicit trade has flourished unabated, seemingly unnoticed by local authorities. Pedestrians often face accidents and difficulties in movement, while substantial illegal profits are being generated from the illegal storage of construction materials.
Allegations have been made against Ziaul Islam, a member of the Dohalia Union Parishad, as the mastermind behind this illegal operation on Pandar khal Dam. It is suggested that these activities are conducted under his leadership. When questioned about the allegations, UP member Ziaul Mia responded, "The Land Administration Office has prohibited the placement of sand and stones on the dam. If the currently stockpiled materials are sold, I will not keep them."
In response to these mounting concerns, Fazle Rabbi Chowdhury, Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Dowarabazar Upazila, stated, "Upon receiving this information, brick, sand, and stone traders have been banned from storing these materials near the dam, along with the imposition of fines."
Sunamganj's Deputy Commissioner, Didare Alam Mohammad Maksud Chowdhury, assured that necessary measures would be taken to restore the dam's natural environment and prevent further degradation.
