Palm pulps getting popular in Chuadanga

In the mid of summer, like other places in the country, the markets of Jibannagar of Chuadanga is also filled with various fruits including mango and litchi. Along with that, delicious Asian Palmyra Palm among other seasonal fruits are also available. The value of this fruit is increasing in extreme heat.

Palm pulps are now being sold in various market areas of the upazila including various alleys of Jibannagar municipal town. The sellers are selling at the rate of 4 to 5 Tk depending on the size of a shell and 10 to 15 Tk per whole shell. According to them, the use of toxic formalin has become very common in the case of other seasonal fruits including mango and litchi. But these are not needed in the shell of the palm.

As a result, the value of palm shells is higher.

Abdul Khaleq, a palm trader in Jibannagar Municipal Town, said, “We collect palms from the owners of palm trees in the villages and sell them at various markets in the rural areas including Jibannagar Municipal Town.

"Every year at this time we sell palm pulps," he said. It is also good to sell palm shells on this hot day. There is also quite a demand. Besides, the prices are also good. I make a profit of Tk 1000 to Tk 1500 per day.

Talking to trader Liaquat Ali, the palm trader said that it is difficult to cut the fruit from the palm tree. It has to be deducted with extra fee. There are 300 to 400 palms in a tree. Sales start from the first week of the summer.  Rakibul Islam, who came to Uthli Bazaar to buy palm shells, said that palm pulps are more beneficial than oily food in hot weather. It has many qualities. It is a delicious fruit. It is good to eat palm pulps in extreme heat. That's why he came to buy palm pulps.

Jibannagar Upazila Agriculture Officer Sharmin Akhter said that there has been a good harvest of palm this year. He further said that palm saplings have been planted on both sides of various rural roads and canals in the upazila by government and private initiatives. Palm trees have many benefits. It is lightning resistant. At the field level, farmers are being encouraged to be more proactive in planting palm trees.

Jibannagar Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer. Selina Akhter said that palm kernels are very beneficial for the body. On hot days, the aqueous part of the palm pulps removes the water vacuum. It also contains many minerals including Calcium, Vitamin A, B and C, Zinc, Potassium, Iron and Calcium. The antioxidants in the palm increase the body's resistance to disease and the shell of the raw palm eliminates anemia and increases eyesight and appetite.
