Palak for lifting VAT, tariff on internet equipments

State Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Zunaid Ahmed Palak on Friday called for repealing Value Added Tax (VAT) and tariffs on Internet equipments for making digital revolution in the country.

“In the interest of building a creative economy and knowledge based society and to take the digital revolution further, I request to all concerned to repeal VAT and tariffs on internet equipment by not seeing the internet as a luxury service but as a basic emergency service such as electricity and fuel,” he said.

The state minister joined the virtual round table meeting on ‘Made in Bangladesh ICT Industry Policy’ this evening and made the proposal in his introductory speech to National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem.

Palak also called for duty-free access to research and development of digital products by 2030.

He also proposed in the budget of the next financial year to give Orix Bio Technology Company duty exemption on the import of equipments and specialized vehicles used in some cases for plasma fractionation in the country.

Besides, in an another webinar titled ‘Future of the Industrial Revolution’ was held at 11 am on Friday.

Policy Adviser of the A2I Programme Anir Chowdhury conducted the webinar while Palak also joined it as chief guest.
