Pakistan has welcomed Bangladesh’s interest in the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, saying Bangladesh’s possible participation could strengthen security cooperation among Muslim-majority countries.
Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan signed the agreement in Makkah on August 7. Under the pact, an armed attack on any one of the three countries will be treated as an attack on all three.
Bangladesh has expressed a positive view of the agreement, although it has not yet made a final decision on whether to join the framework.
Foreign Affairs State Minister Humayun Kabir recently said Bangladesh’s interest in such a security arrangement was natural and that the matter was being considered positively.
Pakistan has also indicated that Bangladesh’s possible participation could contribute to closer strategic and security cooperation in the region.
However, any decision by Bangladesh will depend on its national interests and broader foreign policy considerations.
The prospect of Bangladesh joining the pact has also drawn attention in India. New Delhi has said it is closely monitoring developments and assessing their potential implications for regional peace, stability and India’s national security.
For now, Bangladesh’s participation remains under consideration, and no formal decision has been taken to join the Makkah defence framework.
