The popular folk theatre play ‘Paicho Chor-er Kichchha’ made a colourful return to the stage on Monday evening at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

After a long break, Dhaka Padatik staged this lively production, marking its 35th presentation. Written and directed by Kazi Chapal, the play is based on a famous folk tale from Khulna. It blends Bangla folklore, traditional narration, and satire in a lively and engaging way. The story follows the clever character Paicho Chor, a cunning thief who secretly enters the royal palace and kidnaps the princess. But beyond the humour and clever tricks, the play offers sharp commentary on power, politics, and social hypocrisy. The entire play is presented through a kothok, a traditional storyteller who leads the audience into a world where the thief turns into both a hero and a critic of those in charge. The cast features Kazi Shila, Shyamal Hasan, Salauddin Rahat, Kiran Zakaria, Kazi Samrat, Alamin Swapon, Suman Ghosh, Joya, Sajal, Sirajum Monira Ikra, Mir Farzana Akhtar Nipa, Barnali Ahmed Setu, Chandrima Mallik Tondra, Kabir Baul, and Shankar Kumar Mandal. Director Kazi Chapal said he wanted to revive the folk spirit of Bangla’s theatre through this production, keeping it connected to the land, people, and heritage.

The audience warmly welcomed the performance with laughter and applause, enjoying the simple yet meaningful storytelling.

With its rustic setting, powerful narration, and lively acting, ‘Paicho Chor-er Kichchha’ once again proved the timeless charm of Bangladeshi folk theatre. The organisers hope to stage more shows in the coming days.
