Padma rises above danger level in Shariatpur

Vehicular movement halted at Naria-Zajira road

Flood has started to hit southern region as the water level rises in Padma. Many areas of Shariatpur including Naria and Zajira upazila went under water. Vehicle movement remains stopped at Naria and Zajira connecting road in result of flood.

Sources said that water flows in Padma over 440 cm of danger level at Naria’s Sureswar point that is flows 5 cm over the danger level. The water level rose by 27cm in 24 hours. In last 10 days, water level rose by 140 cm that’s why offshore area of the river became inundated. Vehicle movement became stopped at Naria Zajira road. Water entered into the locality as Pachukhar kandi area of the road was broken down on pressure of the water. Temporary embankment became collapsed.

The Water Development Board confirmed the matter adding that the water level flows at 440 cm where 445 cm is marked as danger level. 140 cm water rose in last 10 days. In result some offshore area of Moktarer char, Naopara union under Naria upazila and Bilashpur, Borokandi, Palerchar, Vedorganj, Tarabunia union under Zajira upazila went under water. Houses of the area faces extreme flood in next days.

Rashed Asgar Sohel Munshi, chairman of Naopara union parishad said that, water flows strongly as the water increases. Geo sacks that was used to protect the dike went under water and the farm land became inundated.

Development works of the area faces interruption. On Wednesday, yard of CC block project went under water. For this reason the task of the project remains stopped, he added.

Prakash Krishno Sarakr, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board, said that as the water tose in Padma, some area of Naria and Zajira went under water. Works of geo sack dumping remains stopped. Wherever we see problems, instantly we rook initiative to solve the problem.

Mamunul Hasan, acting Deputy Commissioner of Shariatpur, said that, some area went under water due to the increase of water. However, it was not a flood stage. We are prepared to face the flood. Disaster management held a meetings over the flood with all concerned officials, all have been instructed to be alert and ready.
