Deputy Minister for Water Resources AKM Enamul Hoque Shameem on Friday said the opening ceremony of the Padma Bridge will be the most memorable festival in the country's history.

"A vested quarter had conspired to halt the construction of the Padma Bridge. But, no conspiracy could hinder the bridge construction due to the honesty and courage of Bangabandhu's daughter, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina," he told a discussion in the capital.

Shariatpur Journalists' Association, Dhaka, arranged the discussion on Padma Bridge at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).

Shameem said the self-financed Padma Bridge awaits its inauguration but conspiracy also started over the opening ceremony.

"But it will not work. On the banks of Padma River, the most memorable festival will be held and it will remain in the history of the country," he said.

Young Bengal convener and Shariatpur-3 MP Nahim Razzak, former chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) Prof Nazrul Islam, chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Corporation (BTRC) Shyam Sunder Sikder, Public Security Division senior secretary Md Akhter Hossain, former president of National Press Club and Daily Jugantor editor Saiful Alam and vice-president of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) Manik Lal Ghosh, among others, spoke at the meeting.

Shariatpur Journalists' Association president Benazir Ahmed presided over the function and its general secretary Asaduzzaman Asad moderated it.
