Paddy harvesting festival starts in Moulvibazar

Production of 2.17 lakh tonnes paddy targeted this year

Boro paddy cutting festival has been started at Haor areas of Moulvibazar district. Deputy Commissioner of Moulvibazar Mir Nahid Ahsan on Wednesday inaugurated the festival in Rajnagar upazila. 

Moulvibazar Department of Agricultural Extension officials said that 56, 330 hectres of farmland were used for boro cultivation this year. It was more than 2000 hectres than the previous year. The target yield of paddy is estimated at 2 lakh 17 thousand metric tonnes for 2021 Boro season. 

Many hybrid variants were cultivated this year with usual BRRI variants. More than 8, 030 hectres of land were used for hybrid paddy cultivation. Most of the district farmlands are filled with ripe paddy fields now. As hybrid variants take less time to get in ripe condition, farmers have already began to cut the paddyes. 

DC Mir Nahid Ahsan at Sonatiki village on Wednesday inaugurated paddy cutting program. Deputy Director of Moulvibazar DAE Kazi Lutful Bari, Rajnagar AC (Land) Urmi Ray, Upazila Agriculture Officer Shahadul Islam and other officials were present at the program. 

Munshibajar UP Chairman Salek Ahmed under Rajbari upazila said that yield of boro cultivation this year was better from the previous year as farmers got seeds and fertilizer in due time. 

As paddy in low land areas are also in ripe condition, Union Parishad officials are taking steps to help farmers collect paddy before any flash flood occurs.

Bimal Das, a farmer from Sonatiki village said that hybrid paddy yield this year has been great due to favourable weather. As farmers received fertilizers and pesticides in due time, bumper yield was expected this year. He hopes to collect 18-20 manns per bigha from his fields. 

Moulvibazar Department of Agricultural Extension Deputy Director Kazi Lutful Bari said that the district agricultural office has a sufficient amount of modern agricultural machineries, Combine harvester and ripper machines. So lack of laborer and man power will not create any hassle.

DC Mir Nahid Ahsan also said during the program that district administration is taking steps to help farmers maintain hygiene regulations during paddy collection.
