Oxygen supply for corona patients a great challenge at RMCH

Published : 06 Jul 2021 09:32 PM

During the first phase of the infection, the Corona patients did not require Oxygen for treatment at RMCH but from the starting of March this year, Oxygen has become an essential element for treatment of Indian Delta variant infected patients.

The demand of Oxygen at the hospital is also increasing day to day. At the first stage around 2,000 litres of Oxygen were required daily but now 8,000 litres of Oxygen are being required. RMCH authorities are in a fix to procure such a huge amount of Oxygen daily for the Corona patients.

It is learnt, the Indian Delta variant of Corona was at first detected in May this year and it spread rapidly in Rajshahi division. Though in June both the infection and the death toll in Corona decreased in Chapainawabganj, it continued to increase in Rajshahi and the Corona unit of RMCH is experiencing a huge number of admissions of Coronavirus patients daily.

With the increased number of admission of the Corona patients, the demand of Oxygen at the unit is also being increased continually. Under such a situation, authorities of RMCH are finding it difficult to tackle the situation. Now, it has been a great challenge for an uninterrupted supply of Oxygen to the Corona patients.

Dr Saiful Ferdous, Deputy Director of RMCH informed the patient whose Oxygen saturation level is decreasing alarmingly is required one cylinder full of Oxygen in every one and a half year.

Accordingly, such a single patient is required to have 16-Oxygen Cylinders during a 24-hour period. Treatment of such patients with low Oxygen levels is really expensive and managing such a huge number of Oxygen cylinders is also very troublesome.

According to sources, during the last 24-hour period, a total of 19 patients died in Corona at RMCH while in the month of June a total of 405 patients died in Corona at the hospital. At present, 99 percent of Corona patients at RMCH require Oxygen support. At the first stage the hospital authorities had tried to tackle the situation with Oxygen cylinders but that created trouble and the uninterrupted Oxygen to some patients were being supplied through a central pipeline system at the hospital.

Brig Gen Shamim Yazdani, Director of RMCH informed, authorities of the hospital were trying their best to treat all Corona patients properly. More general wards are being prepared for treatment of the Coronavirus patients but even after increasing the number of wards and beds, it seems troublesome to manage everything properly. All the admitted Coronavirus patients need the Oxygen that is why the supply of uninterrupted Oxygen is now a great challenge.
