At least hundred of Rohingyas were promised to send to Malaysia by fishing trawler from Bangladesh, instead they were brought back to Inani sea beach in Cox’s Bazar bluffing that they have reached Malaysia. The deceitful incident happened on Monday.
After wandering for 10 days in the Bay of Bengal on Fishing trawlers, these Rohingyas were brought to Cox’s Bazar Inani sea beach and told that they have reached Malaysia.
Members of law enforcement force received such information after detaining 26 Rohingyas from Inani area in Jaliapalong Union of Ukhiya upazila.
Local witnesses said they were surprised to see nearly a hundred Rohingyas suddenly coming from the sea beach's sand towards the locality at around 4:00am. The locals informed the matter to the Coast Guard station at that time. However, no immediate action was taken. The locals claimed that at least 70 Rohingyas managed to escape to other locations taking advantage of the situation.
Among the detained Rohingyas, Khursida Begum, 24, a resident of Rohingya camp no. 17 in Ukhiya, said we had set off from Teknaf on a trawler with the intention of going to Malaysia, but the Myanmar Navy stopped us while crossing the maritime boundary. The captain turned the boat back, and we were in the sea for 10 days. Later, the traffickers dropped us here, claiming we had arrived in Malaysia.
Rezaul Karim, in-charge of the Inani police outpost, said that efforts are underway to identify the traffickers and legal action is being taken regarding this matter.
