The number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Tanintharyi Region surpassed 60,000 in October, driven by escalating airstrikes, armed conflict, arson, and civilian detentions by the junta, according to an October report from the FE5 Tanintharyi research group.

At least 41 clashes between junta forces and revolutionary groups were reported in the region last month. These hostilities, combined with other military actions, have displaced thousands, further straining humanitarian resources.

In October alone, the junta detained 208 civilians in Tanintharyi Region. Although 147 of those detained have been released, four died in custody, and 57 remain imprisoned. Additionally, armed groups and People’s Defence Forces (PDFs) detained 25 people, with five fatalities reported among those in custody.

The report also highlighted civilian casualties, attributing 12 deaths to the junta and its affiliates. Other fatalities included three caused by the Kawthoolei Army (KTLA), two by unknown assailants, and two during informer clearance operations, bringing the total civilian death toll in October to 19.

The junta conducted ground offensives and artillery and drone attacks in areas along the Union Highway, including parts of Palaw and Launglon townships, in efforts to reclaim territories controlled by revolutionary forces. Fierce clashes occurred in six villages along the highway, ultimately leading to the junta retaking those areas.
