Post-poll violence in Munshiganj

Over 50 houses vandalized, livestock cash looted

Post-election violence in Bakulkala and Solarchar areas of Munshiganj Sadar Upazila resulted in attacks, vandalism, cocktail explosions and looting of more than 50 houses. 

The incidents took place in Solarchar and Bakultala villages of Adhara Union in Char area of Sadar Upazila recently. Three people including two women were injured in the incidents. The victims also complained of looting ornaments, cash and cows and goats.

Injured Renu Begum (50), Mahfuz (50) and Shahnaz (50) had been treated at hospital. The incidents occurred in two villages. Additional police were deployed to maintain peace in the areas.

While visiting the scenes, the victims and local sources said that in the last 12th National Assembly elections, there was a dispute between the people of Solarchar and Bakulkala areas where Boat was defeated by independent candidate with scissors. Around 6:30 a.m. on Monday morning, Ahadul, Aslam, Minhaj and Saiful, sons of Borhan Master of Solarchar village, allegedly attacked Solarchar and Bakultala villages with hundreds of people from Adhara, Amaghata, Majhikandi, Solarchar, Nayakandi and Tatikandi areas and vandalized houses and shops there. They spread panic by exploding hundreds of cocktails and looted heads of cattle, goats and goods by displaying native weapons. The attackers vandalized around 50 houses and took away 15 cows and 8 goats. Ornaments and cash were also looted.

Zakia Begum, wife of Mahabub Bhuiya, who was injured in the attack, said that 5 cows, 7 goats and 10 cattle were looted by ransacking her house. The attack was carried out by disconnecting the electricity as there was a CCTV camera in their house. The attackers also took away two CCTV cameras and a CCTV camera machine. Later, additional police arrived and brought the situation under control.

Panna Begum, daughter of Amin Uddin Sarkar, resident of Bakultala village, said that early in the morning, under the leadership of Scissors (Kanchi) supporter Ahadul, they attacked our house and looted Tk 5 lakh in cash and 5 barrels. During this time, they ransacked our house.

Aggrieved Modi shopkeeper Lablu Gazi said that the attackers looted the store's goods including Tk 50,000 in cash after attacking his shop. He suffered a loss of Tk 3 lakh.

Monir Hossain, a resident of Bakultala market, said that his shop was vandalized and items were looted. He has lost goods worth about 50 thousand.

Besides, Shamim Paik said that their shops were looted. Goods worth about Tk 1.5 lakh in the incident.

Lutfar Rahman said that his shop was looted and vandalised.

In Bakultala village, it can be seen that Kamrul Alam Chunnu's house Thai glass, Farooq Sarkar's house and Thai glass, Mochan Sarkar's house, Monir Hossain Dewan's house, Akbar Hossain's house Thai were vandalized, Ohid's 1 cow looted, Arshed's house vandalized, Ayat's second floor Thai vandalized, Aslam Master's House vandalised, Thai vandalism on Joynal Pike, Ripon Sarkar's Thai vandalised and house vandalised, Akhter Hussain's shop looted and Thai vandalism damaged, Delo Molla's house vandalised, Jan Sharif's house and door vandalism, Zangir Gazi's two-storey Thai vandalism, Faisal's Thai vandalism. Besides, the houses of many others were attacked and vandalized and looted.

In Solar Char area, Monik Dewan's house was vandalized and cash looted, Elias Bhuia's house vandalized, cattle and goats, cash and ornaments looted, Eamon Majhi's Thai vandalized and cocktail blasted on tiles, Mahabub Bhuia's house vandalized. Besides, the houses of many others were attacked and vandalized and looted.

Conscious circles say that some tout people of the village have made the issue of the election for their own ends. They are disturbing the environment by doing such incidents and they are trying to loot and loot the resources themselves. They also say that members of the robber gang were also involved in this incident. Because, by issuing this incident, they also took an opportunity to commit robbery.

Attempts were made to contact the accused in this regard but they could not be found.

In this regard, Additional Superintendent of Police Thandar Khairul Hasan said, “When we received the news of violence in the area, we immediately reached in the area with the force. 

We have seen pictures of 7 houses vandalized. Five teams were deployed in the area to bring the situation under control and arrested those involved. Four cows rescued. There was a conflict between the two groups since long.

The officer-in-charge (OC) of Munshiganj Sadar police station, Md Aminul Islam, said that the case was under process. Efforts were on to arrest those involved. Four rescued cows had been given to their owners.
