In the current season, Chatmohar Upazila of Pabna has the potential to produce about 15 thousand metric tons of onions. Meanwhile, the farmer has extracted tubers from the land. They have also finished planting onion seedlings. Farmers who planted tubers for seed production had their fields full of white flowers. They will start collecting seeds from onion flowers in the next few days.
According to Chatmohar Agriculture Office sources, in the current season onion has been cultivated in a total of 1 thousand 211 hectares of land in Chatmohar. Out of this, 590 hectares of seedling onion, 620 hectares of tuber onion and 1 hectare of onion for seed production have been cultivated. The farmers have already extracted the onion tubers from the land. The work of planting onion seedlings has also been completed recently. As the weather was favorable for onion cultivation, the yield was about 14 metric tonnes per hectare. The average yield of onion seedlings per hectare is about 11 metric tonnes. As such, there is a possibility of producing about 15 thousand tons of onion in Chatmohar with tuber and seedling onion.
Farmer Hyder Ali of Katenga village in the upazila has already shown success in onion and onion seed production. He has been cultivating onions for the past nineteen years. Also doing seed production. This year, he got a yield of about 40 mounds in tuber onions. He is producing onion seeds in one and a half bigha land. Haider Ali said that the production of seeds from tubers costs about 50 thousand taka in total for cultivation of land, tubers, fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation, labor costs. About 100 kg of onion seeds are available per bigha unless natural calamities occur. In normal times, the price of onion seeds per kg is a little less than two thousand rupees. However, in some years, the price of onion seeds per kg goes up to 5 thousand taka. Then they get more profit.
Chatmohar Upazila Agricultural Officer AA Masum Billah said, we are working on expanding onion cultivation. Many farmers are receiving government assistance. Taherpuri and Kalas Nagar varieties of onions are generally cultivated in Chatmohar. Due to favorable weather conditions in the current season, tuber onion farmers have got good yield. Planting of seedling onions has been completed. Seed growers will start collecting onion seeds in a few days. Farmers are benefiting from good prices till now. They are hoping for a good yield also.
