Original ‘Venom’ movie director Ruben Fleischer reveals his hopes to see Tom Hardy's alien symbiote and Tom Holland's ‘Spider-Man’ crossover. Hardy made his debut as disgraced journalist Eddie Brock in the 2018 box office hit, which served as the launching point for Sony's ‘Spider-Man’ Universe, previously titled the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters. Thanks to the film's success, Hardy would return for the sequel ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’, which further branched out the SSU and began building the bridges to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, home to Holland's webslinger.
Holland swung into the MCU in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ before leading his own trilogy of films with Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home and the newly released No Way Home, as well as appearing in both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. The third installment in his solo franchise saw the MCU connect to past Spider-Man franchises with the returns of both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, as well as the villains from their respective films. While larger plans for ‘Venom’ in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ were ultimately scrapped, one creative is hoping the two still get their chance to fight in the future.
Ahead of the release of his long-awaited uncharted movie adaptation, Ruben Fleischer caught up with Cinema Blend. In looking back at his time as the original Venom movie director, Fleischer expressed his hopes to return to the fold at some point and to see the symbiote crossover with Spider-Man.
The interconnected nature of the SSU and MCU has been a subject of many debates, theories and confusion in the wake of Sony's updated deal with Marvel in 2019, in which they would share Holland's Spider-Man and keep loose connections between the two.
