The government on Sunday launched an online sacrificial cattle market ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul Azha to tackle the spread of Coronavirus. Reportedly, the Dhaka North City Corporation introduced the online platform titled “Digital Animal Hut” for buying and selling sacrificial cattle. Urging people to buy and sell animals through online, it has assured farmers and consumers of providing all necessary supports.
We appreciate the government’s move to launch online sacrificial cattle market amid the pandemic. Using the newly launched platform, a potential buyer will be able to view animals on website, place order and pay, all digitally.
Authorities concerned must ensure fair price for the cattle farmers and also it will have to remain cautious so that no customer gets cheated. Also, general people should be encouraged to buy sacrificial animals using the online platform. As the coronavirus situation has become more dire this year compared to the last year, we need to be more careful to avoid crowds. We need to take steps based on experience garnered from last year.

The country has adequate supply of sacrificial animals this year. And the government would not allow import of sacrificial animals to save cattle farmers, traders, and marginal farmers from financial loss in this ongoing coronavirus crisis and stop further transmission of this deadly virus.
The government should run media campaigns to encourage people to buy sacrificial animals from digital platforms. Also, all the farmers and sellers will have to provide adequette information about their animals in this online market platform. Last but not least, the government must take initiative to run veterinary medical teams across the country to ensure healthy and disease-free sacrificial animals for the consumers during the Eid.
