The number of job postings on the online job portals dropped by 87 percent in April in the aftermath of a nationwide lockdown since mid-March, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) said.

The regular job application also declined by 81 percent, the ADB said in a real-time assessment on Covid-19 impact on job postings in Bangladesh, released recently.

It said the assessment was prepared using data from the leading job portals in the country.

According to ABD, most of the industrial groups in the country have stopped new recruitment from March since there is no demand for new staff as the production and supply activities of the companies are closed or partially open.

The highest number of the recruitment process has been in the textile sector, followed by the manufacturing and education sectors.

The ADB data showed, jobs dropped by 95 percent in textile and education sectors each and 92 percent in manufacturing industries.

The sharp decline in textile industry may be related to the pandemic affecting key export markets such as Europe and the United States, it observed.

According to the ADB report, 60000 jobs advertisements were posted on Bdjobs portal in 2019. Of the total, highest jobs 15 percent were posted from the textile sector, followed by the production sector 13 percent and ICT sector nine percent. Now, hiring in all these sectors declined.

According to the National Labor Force Survey, Bangladesh has the highest employment of 40.6 percent in agriculture, forestry, and fisheries. Besides, 14.4 percent in the manufacturing sector, 14.2 percent in the wholesale and retail business, 8.6 percent in the transport and stock sector, 5.8 percent in the utilities and construction sector, and education has 3.8 percent employment.
