Onion production gets boost in Magura

Four upazilas of Magura have bumper onion crop this season. Of the four upazilas in the district, Sreepur upazila has the highest number of onion teas. This bumper crop of onions has brought a smile to the faces of the farmers of the district.

The agriculture department says that this Season the farmers of the district will benefit more from onion cultivation as the weather is favorable. A total of onion cultivation has been done in 10,500 hectares of land in the district. Onion has been cultivated in 1,190 hectares in Sadar upazila, 6,350 hectares in Sreepur upazila, 1,140 hectares in Shalikha upazila and 1,8 20 hectares in Mohammadpur upazila. This season the production has been 14 metric tons per hectare. The target has been set at 1.47 metric tons. Farmers have cultivated Bari 1, 4, Taher Puri, Laltir King varieties of onion.

Rakibul Islam farmer Of Village  Mokarddam Khola under Sreepur upazila, said that this season the onion has improved in the land as the weather is favorable. I brought  Laltir variety of onion 4  bighas of land under Onion Cultivation. I hope there will be 80-90 Mon of onion per bigha. Now onion is being sold at 950 to 1000 taka per Mon . This season I Shall earn 1 to 1.5 lakh taka from the bumper crop of onions

Another farmer Nirmal Kumar Biswas of Joynagar village under  Sreepur upazila told "I have cultivated  high Yielding BARI 4 varieties of onion in 2 bigha of land this season. The yield has been good. The color, size and texture of this variety of onion is very good. It is like the native variety of onion.

Sushanta Kumar Pramanik, deputy director of the district agricultural extension department, said the bumper crop of onions has been harvested in the district this season due to favorable weather. Onion growers were not harmed as there was no natural calamity. Free fertilizers and seeds have been distributed among the farmers of the district to encourage onion cultivation. The farmers of the district will be encouraged more for this cultivation in future
