The price of local onions has become uncontrollable in Biramganj upazila market of Dinajpur. Within just two days, the price has increased by Tk 25 to Tk 30 per kg, with local onions now selling for Tk 100 to Tk 110.

Just three days ago, the same onions were priced at Tk 70-75 per kg, a rate now beyond the reach of many average consumers. In the wholesale market, prices jumped from Tk 72-85 per kg on Friday-Saturday to Tk 90-105 now.

Traders cite the halted import of Indian onions as the primary reason for this unusual price hike. The absence of Indian onions has increased pressure on the local supply.

Retailers report a Tk 20-25 price increase at the wholesale level, alongside a severe supply shortage. The current market supply is insufficient. With the onion season over, stocks have also dwindled, leading to higher prices at the source.

Furthermore, onion seed planting started late in several unions, delaying the arrival of the new crop.

In this situation, traders are demanding permission for onion imports. Concerns are rising that without timely import approval, the market instability will worsen, directly impacting general consumers.
