Onion price falls, veges still costly

The price of onion price fell slightly in Dhaka’s kitchen markets on Friday with price of most vegetables remaining high compared to the last week.

Local variety of onion was sold at Tk 80 to Tk 85 a kilogram (kg) – about Tk 20 less form previous price, while Indian onions at Tk 65 to Tk 70 per kg in the capital’s Karwan Bazar wholesale market on Friday.

A consumer from Karwan Bazar said that government surveillance helped onion price fall. “Price will go down further after imported onion arrives,” he hoped. 

On spot visiting at the capital’s different kitchen markets including Karwan Bazar, Rampura, Malibagh, Segunbagicha, Fakirapul, Motijheel T&T Colony Bazar and Khilgaon on Friday, this correspondent found that most of the vegetables still being sold at high prices with some of its prices on the rise.

Price of string bean went up by Tk 20 per kilogram (kg), and the price of bitter gourd fell by Tk 20 per kg, while prices of potatoes, rice, pulses, oil and spices remained unchanged. 

At Rampura Kitchen Market, string bean was sold at Tk 80 to Tk 90 per kg, bitter gourd a Tk 50 to Tk 60 per kg, cucumber at Tk 50 to Tk 90 per kg, carrots at Tk 90 per kg, snake gourd at Tk 60 per kg, ribbed gourd and sponse gourd at Tk 50 to Tk 60 per kg, teasle gourd at Tk 60 to Tk 70 per kg, palwal at Tk 60, brinjal at Tk 60, tomato at Tk 120, okra at Tk 60 and sweet gourd was sold at Tk 40 a kg. 

On the other hand, green chili was sold at Tk 150 to Tk 170 pe kg while potato was Tk 40, papaya at Tk 45 per kg. Ibrahim, a vegetable trader from Rampura, said, "As supply is still inadequate in the market, price of all most all vegetables are higher. As new vegetables is expected to arrive in the market soon, then price will automatically come down". 

Rice traders said price of Atas rice rose by Tk 50 to Tk 60 per sack while price of miniket rice went up by Tk 100 a sack.

The standard verity of Miniket was sold at Tk 52 to 54 per kg and the fine variety was at Tk 55 to Tk 56 per kg while Basmati was sold at Tk 58 to 60 per kg, Atap rice at Tk 55 to 60 per kg and paijams at Tk 45 and Atas is Tk 45 to 46 per kg. Besides, boiled rice is selling at Tk 42 to 44 per kg. 

Meanwhile, price of beef was at Tk 600 and mutton at Tk 900 a kg while price of chicken went down slightly with broiler chicken being sold at Tk 120, Pakistani chicken at Tk 220, layer chicken at Tk 210 and local chicken at Tk 450 per kg.
