One to die for killing schoolgirl in Netrokona

A Netrokona court sentenced a youth to death and fined him Tk 50,000 for hacking to death a 10th-grade student at Barhatta upazila in Netrokona district.

Netrokona District and Sessions Judge Md Hafizur Rahman delivered the verdict on Tuesday.

The convict is Md Kawsar Mia, 18, from prem nagar village under Baushi union of the upazila.

According to court sources, Kawser Mia used to stalk Mukti Rani Barman, 15, daughter of Nikhil Barman of Premnagor Chhalipura village, on her way to school.

Police said Mukti, on multiple occasions, fended off his advances prompting Kawser to threaten her with dire consequences.

When the girl was returning home from school on May 2, 2023, Kawser and his cohorts waylaid her.

At one stage, he started stabbing the girl, leaving her critically injured.

She died on the way to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

Following the incident, deceased's father, Nikhil Chandra Barman, filed a murder case against Kawsar Mia with Barhatta Police Station on May 3 of that year.

After investigation, police filed a chargesheet against the accused in court on July 31 of the same year.

The learned judge of the court, Netrokona District and Sessions Judge Md Hafizur Rahman, delivered the verdict on Tuesday in the presence of the accused.
